The Minden Bible Church more than tripled its goal for its first-ever Minden Water Walkers 6K event by raising $3,200 Aug. 3.
In a press release, the church said approximately 100 people attended the event to trek around town to fundraise for the humanitarian group World Vision. The organization helps provide water sources for communities around the world.
Organizer Sharon Ganesh said they were surprised by all the people who came to participate.
“It went really, really well. Everybody enjoyed themselves,” Ganesh said. The event offered people the chance to carry water jugs, mimicking those carried by people who have to trek long distances to collect water.
Participants raised well over the $1,000 goal.
“People just really embraced the cause and wanted to be part of it, whether they were walking for it or even just donating,” Ganesh said.
The funding will amount to 65 children getting clean water for a year, Ganesh said. The church will have a cheque presentation during its Aug. 25 service at 10:30 a.m. to World Vision Canada.
Ganesh said there is a desire to hold the event again in some form next year but there’s no guarantee.
“It was really a pleasant surprise to see as many people come out for the cause and just put their love into motion,” Ganesh said. “We’re very appreciative and we do hope we can do this again next year.”
