Dog sled company gets international exposure

Former Gelert resident Tyson Farrell was mid-air when he saw a place all too familiar.
But he wasn’t peering out the window when he spotted the Highlands aboard a Brussels Airlines plane; it was a feature article on dog sledding that made it on the pages of b inspired, the airlines’ in-flight magazine.
The short editorial, found on page 58 of last month’s issue, highlights some of the available dog sled tours and provides a website link to Winterdance Dogsled Tours, a local tour operator.
The magazine contacted Winterdance in the fall, according to co-owner Tanya McCready.
“They reached out to us ... about the story and asked for details about the area/our tours, etc.,” wrote McCready in an email.
However, a photo of two people dog sledding is “from somewhere else,” she said.
Although she hadn’t seen the article, Amanda Virtanen, the county’s tourism director, said she is constantly pitching the Highlands to the media.
“We do international outreach a fair bit – at least quarterly,” said Virtanen.
The Highlands was featured in a few other publications last year, including The New York Times and Food Traveler Magazine.
Brussels Airlines is Belgium’s largest airline, with flights to destinations in Europe, Africa and North America.
