Rotarian Marran Woods was ecstatic after discovering one of the tickets she sold to Vijay Marathe of Haliburton was drawn at the Rotary Carnival.
“I take selling these tickets very personally,” said Woods in a phone interview. “I want to sell the winning ticket, and I’ve always maintained that I would probably be more excited about selling the winning ticket than actually winning the prize.”
She once sold a winning early bird ticket for a previous draw, but this was her first grand prize winner.
Marathe purchased seven tickets from Woods and 14 tickets from past Rotary president Richard van Nood at Midnight Madness a few days earlier. He plans on taking $30,000 cash instead of the 2017 Camaro LT Coupe.
“I feel very great,” he told The Highlander. “It’s because of the blessing of Haliburton that I won the [draw].”
Marathe thanked van Nood and Woods, who he has “special respect” for.
He’s lived in Haliburton since 2009 and works at Subway restaurant on Highland Street.
More than 6,000 tickets were sold for the draw, which is slightly above last year. The money raised will go toward various community initiatives.
